Manage AI: Analyze Documents

Document analysis capabilities in Clio depend on your firm’s subscription: Manage AI or Clio Work. This article explains how to analyze documents in Clio Manage and directs you to the appropriate tools for your needs.

Guidance for Vincent users

If your firm uses Clio Work, you can use Vincent for comprehensive and cited legal analysis. Clio is the preferred solution for research-grade analysis and deep legal context. To learn more about Clio Work, see the article: Get Started with Vincent in Clio Work

  • The Document analysis feature is not available in Clio Manage if your firm has Clio Work.

Analyze documents with Manage AI

If your firm only subscribes to Manage AI, you can use the Document Analyzer in Clio Manage to quickly get information from your documents. You can also customize the response for a quick summary or a more detailed and thorough analysis.

Note: Manage AI can only analyze documents associated with a matter.

Access document analyzer

You can open the document analyzer from the AI Launchpad or directly from your document lists.

  • AI Launchpad: Click the diamond icon and select Analyze Documents. 
  • Document Action: Next to a document in the Action column, click the arrow and select Analyze with Vincent.

 

File types and size limits

With Clio's Document Analyzer, you can analyze up to 25 documents in DOCX, TXT, or PDF format. The file limit is 50MB per file, and the total limit per analysis is also 50 MB.

Important: The Document Analyzer will retain your recent analysis, but cannot preserve chat context across sessions or respond to follow-up questions based on past interactions.

To analyze documents

  1. Select an open matter from the dropdown or type in the matter name.
  2. Select one of the following options:
    • Select documents in a matter: Pick your file(s) from the matter to analyze.
    • Upload new documents: Click Choose Files or drag and drop your file(s) into the upload area.
  3. Optional: Customize the response type. This option appears next to the send arrow.
    • Quick: Get a concise analysis focused on specific information.
    • Thorough: Receive a comprehensive and detailed analysis.
  4. Click Next: Ask your question, then wait for the initial analysis to complete.
  5. Enter a question or request to extract key details. Some examples include.
    • Who are the parties involved?
    • Create a time of events from these documents.

 

Review and use analysis results

After Manage AI completes an analysis, you can review citations, customize, share, or save the results.

  • Review citations: In-text citations appear in the analysis and link directly to the original text in your documents. Click a citation to preview the referenced section or click the hyperlink icon to open the full document.
  • Customize: Click Configure to adjust initial summaries (e.g., view a summary per document or a combined summary).
  • Share: Click Share, then Copy to copy the text for sharing with firm users.
  • Save: Click Share, then Save. You can save the analysis as a New note or a New document (.docx).
