Billing templates give your firm full control over how bills and trust requests look, using a visual editor and no external tools such as Word or a PDF editor. You build a template on a single drag-and-drop canvas, then edit, duplicate, and delete it as your firm's branding changes. A branded template applies your firm's layout to every bill you generate.
Note: Bill themes are configured through a series of settings menus and are faster to set up for a standard bill layout. Billing templates instead provide a single canvas where you see and adjust the layout directly, giving full control over structure and placement. Copy an existing theme into the template editor to carry a design forward instead of starting from a blank canvas. See Create and Manage Bill Themes for the theme-based approach.

- Click the more icon at the top right, then click Rename template. Enter a template name and click Save.
- When you are satisfied with your template, select Save.
Design trust request templates
Trust request templates use the same visual editor as billing templates, so you build the layout once and apply your firm's branding to both bills and trust requests. A trust request template can include different sections than an invoice template, such as Trust Line Items in place of standard billing line items, since a trust request asks for funds rather than confirming payment for completed work.
Tip: Use the All, Invoice, and Trust request filters at the top of the Billing templates screen to find an existing template by type.
Note: Set which trust request template applies by default under Settings > Billing > General. See Configure General Bill Settings.
- Go to Settings > Billing > Billing templates.
- Click Create template for, then select Trust request.
- Use the customization pane to add, remove, and arrange sections, and the preview pane to review your changes.
- In the Structure subtab, click Add new section to add components, use the expander arrow and Remove to remove a component, and drag the six-dot handle to rearrange components.
- In the Design subtab, set page margins, font properties, and any watermarks.
- In the trust request template preview, click a component to edit:
- Click and type to add static text, position, or move variable placeholders (text wrapped in double braces {{ … }}).
- Click Insert field for more placeholders, click Insert elements to add lines, links, images, or tables.
- Click Insert field to find and select additional variable placeholders,
- Click Insert elements to add horizontal lines, links, images, or tables, and
- Apply text formatting that conforms to your firm's brand.
