Create Custom Fields in Clio Manage

Custom fields are additional fields of information that you may need to capture for a contact or matter that Clio does not automatically capture during contact and matter creation. You can create custom fields for matters and contacts and you can group them together into field sets in order to easily manage several fields that apply to particular situations, like specific practice areas.

Note: All users can use custom fields, but only users with administrator permissions can create, edit, or delete custom fields and custom field sets.

Create custom fields

You can create custom fields for matters and contacts. When creating a custom field, you can set it as a default field and select whether it is required. Default custom fields apply to all contact and matter forms and can be left blank, while your required fields need to be filled and cannot be left blank.

Note: If you need to uncheck the default option from a default custom field, and the custom field is part of a field set, remove the default option from the field set first.
  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter custom fields or Contact custom fields.
  3. Click Add custom field.
  4. Complete the custom field details. The Name field is limited to 64 characters.
  5. Click Save.

Create custom field sets

After creating your custom fields, you can add them to a field set. When creating a field set, you can select to make the field set a default set. A default field set will appear on all contacts or matters.

  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter custom fields or Contact custom fields.
  3. Click Add custom field set.
  4. Complete the details and add existing individual custom fields.
  5. Click Save.
