Review Accepted Payment Methods

Clio Payments enables firms to accept client bill payments using several payment methods. Clients can pay by credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Pay by Bank. Offering several methods gives clients flexibility, and each method routes funds to your firm's account.

Important: Transactions initiated on bank holidays, weekends, or after business hours begin processing on the next business day. Settlement timelines are based on business days only.

Credit and debit cards

The cards your clients can use depend on their location. The table below outlines the cards clients can use, depending on whether they are based in the UK or Ireland, or internationally.

Location Accepted cards
United Kingdom Visa (debit or credit), Mastercard (debit or credit), American Express
Ireland Visa (debit or credit), Mastercard (debit or credit), American Express
International Visa (debit or credit), Mastercard (debit or credit), American Express, Discover, Diners Club, JCB, UnionPay

The following card limitations may apply:

  • Some debit cards restrict online or subscription payments. Advise clients to confirm eligibility with their bank or card provider.
  • Prepaid cards are accepted for one-time payments only.
  • Cards other than Visa or Mastercard may carry location-specific limitations.

Pay by Bank

In the UK, Pay by Bank is a secure electronic payment option within Clio Payments that lets your clients make swift, direct transfers from their bank account to your firm's account. This method uses bank-to-bank transfers (Direct Debit or Direct Credit) at 0% per transaction, giving clients a convenient alternative to card payments. Payments process securely through a trusted integration (Plaid), though certain transactions take up to seven business days to clear.

Important: Affirm handles Pay by Bank disputes. Your firm receives notice of any dispute, and the disputed amount is held for up to 30 days.

Digital wallets

Clio Payments also allows clients to pay by digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
