AI features in Clio
Because AI features in Clio are designed to assist in your regular workflows, they are integrated in various areas in Clio.

Clio's AI prompt panel
Access the most impactful AI workflows from any page in Clio by clicking the Clio icon in your top right header bar. This opens a panel on the right where you can select from AI-suggested options or use natural language to describe what you want to do in Clio or any questions you have. You can ask questions about matters and contacts, request that certain actions be taken, and more. Refer to these guidelines to learn how to write effective prompts.
You can also get access to specific AI features where you need it most, like scheduling events from documents, getting writing assistance for emails, text messages, and other documents, or viewing summaries of voices calls.
Today
Clio's AI provides you with a summary of your top priorities, upcoming events, and tasks in your Today (home) page. These suggestions help you to understand at a glance what your day and week may look like.
Suggested actions widget in matter dashboards
While viewing a matter, Clio's AI will surface suggested actions relevant to the matter that you can take to keep the matter moving forward. Clio's AI can suggest actions like
- extracting events from documents and suggest you review these events,
- preparing and approving invoices,
- drafting communications based on your recent matter activity, and
- creating time entries.
To toggle which of these actions you want Clio to suggest, go to a matter and select the settings (gear) icon on the panel. Use the toggles to turn specific suggested actions on or off, the click Save preference.
When you are in a matter, you can act on these suggestions.
- In the Suggested actions widget, for the relevant suggestion, click the more (vertical ellipses) icon.
- Select an option to take action, or click Dismiss if the suggestion is not relevant to you.
View AI events in the Audit Log
When Clio's AI performs and action on your behalf, Clio logs this event in the firm's Audit Log, helping your firm meet compliance standards. The log shows a record of the last 90 days with information like the type of event, where the action was taken in the web app, the date and time, user details, IP address information, and more.
Data Security and Compliance
Clio's continued commitment to your security and firm privacy means that you can feel confident that:
- Your data is protected: Clio applies the same robust security, privacy, and compliance standards across all its products and features, including AI features.
- Your information stays private: AI features in Clio adhere to your existing Clio Manage permissions and will not surface data or matter details from files or matters you are not authorised to access. Your data is never used to train external AI models. Refer to Clio’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.
- Your data stays in your region: Depending on where your firm is located, AI features in Clio may process your queries on servers located outside your home jurisdiction. After your request is processed, any resulting data remains securely stored within your region, in line with Clio's standard data handling practices
You are responsible for your firm's compliance. Laws and regulations about AI and data handling vary from region to region, and you are responsible for ensuring your firm's use of AI features aligns with your local regulatory and compliance requirements. Consult with your internal compliance team or legal counsel before using AI features, especially if your firm has specific data residency or regulatory obligations.
Note: Firms sometimes opt out of AI features for client confidentiality or regulatory reasons. That choice also narrows document search to file names and metadata, so a matter review or discovery search returns fewer keyword matches.
Opt out of AI features
Important: This article describes unified Clio. Unified Clio is available to firms in stages, so your account may still use the old experience. To switch to the old experience, open the user menu. Then select Switch to the old experience. Your data and settings are the same in both experiences.
Administrators can turn off AI access for the entire firm with the Firm-level AI access setting. One setting covers both Clio Manage and Clio Grow. Only administrators can access this setting.
- Click the user menu (top right) > Manage settings > Security & Compliance > AI features.
- Click Open AI settings. The AI access settings open in a new browser tab.
- Toggle Firm-level AI access off.
- Click the user menu (top right) > Manage settings > Admin Console > Settings > AI Access.
- Toggle Firm-level AI access off.
