Understand Clio Work

Clio Work connects your matters with the world's largest global law library to deliver cited legal research, document analysis, and case strategy. Vincent AI is your legal assistant within Clio Work. You can type questions, describe outcomes, or upload documents in plain language, and Vincent responds with research, analysis, or drafted documents grounded in verified legal authority. When you select a matter, Vincent can also read the matter's full context from Clio Manage and take actions in Clio Manage on your behalf, such as updating tasks or creating new matters.

Note: Clio Work is designed to support the substantive practice of law, not replace professional judgment. All research, analysis, and document outputs generated by Vincent AI require final review and due diligence by a qualified legal professional.

Drafting and asset creation with Vincent

During a conversation Vincent, you can open the content in an editable panel—the Legal Pad—alongside your conversation. Legal Pad offers a quick way to turn a research answer, analysis, or drafted passage into a standalone document where you can revise the document, apply formatting, and save it directly to Clio Manage without ever leaving Clio.

For work that requires you to create presenter-ready or share-ready assets with professional branding, Vincent can also build interactive dashboards. Describe the resource you want and Vincent creates a single self-contained .html file that you can open beside your conversation, download, and send to a colleague or a client. Refer to the information about building dashboards in Write Effective Prompts for Vincent.

Clio Work also includes a full-featured, web-based document editor where you can draft, format, and finalize legal documents with Vincent, without leaving Clio. You can draft documents generatively, or using templates and court forms. See Document Editor and Draft Documents from Forms and Templates in Clio Work for full guidance.

Understand memory in Vincent

Vincent retains context across conversations through persistent memory. This allows Vincent to build on prior work, apply your preferences automatically, and pick up where you left off on a matter without requiring you to re-explain context at the start of each session.

Vincent memory works across three areas:

  • Matter memory: Key facts about a specific matter (e.g., parties, jurisdiction, prior advice, drafting decisions, and strategic choices) that build up over time as you work on the matter with Vincent.
  • User memory: Your individual working preferences, such as drafting style, tone, formatting conventions, and repeated instructions. These apply across all your matters and conversations.
  • Conversation memory: Context established within a session, e.g., decisions made, outputs generated, and facts confirmed. Relevant information is carried forward into matter and user memory at the end of a session.

Understand the Clio Library

Vincent answers research questions by retrieving and analysing documents from the Clio Library, a database consisting of primary law sources, dockets, and secondary materials that is continuously updated and maintained.

When you submit a research question, Vincent queries the Library and returns cited sources in the Legal Authorities panel. Sources can include:

Primary law

Constitutions, statutes, regulations, administrative materials, rules, and case law.

Secondary sources

Journals, books, practice notes, jury verdicts, forms, and corporate filings.

You can also search the Clio Library directly from the left navigation without starting a Vincent conversation. See Search and Browse Clio Library for guidance on searching, filtering, and verifying sources.
