If your firm enabled enhanced client funds accounting, users with the appropriate permissions can reverse certain client funds transactions for compliant recordkeeping. Clio creates an offsetting transaction so the original is negated, while both records stay on file for your audit trail.
You cannot reverse client funds transactions for payments received via Clio Payments, for reconciled transactions, for transactions on closed bank accounts, for voided checks, or for payments against client fund transactions.
Reverse client funds transactions
- Go to Accounts and open the relevant client funds account.
- In the transactions table, find the transaction you want to reverse.
- In that row's Actions column, click Reverse or click the down arrow and select Reverse from the menu.
- Fill the modal.
-
Set the Reversal date. The date must be on or after the original transaction's date up to the current date.
Tip: Consult with your accountant on the best date to use based on the reason for the reversal. - Optional: Enter a Reversal reason.
-
- Click Reverse.
Both the original transaction and the new reversal remain visible as their own rows anywhere you can view your transactions table (e.g., in Accounts, Contacts, and Matters).
Note: If your firm's compliance jurisdiction is England & Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland, both the original and the reversal transactions display with strikethrough formatting in your transactions tables and in PDF exports, so reversed entries are easy to spot at a glance.
