Use Clio Work in Claude and Codex

In Claude and Codex, you can call on Clio Work for the legal part of a larger task. Clio Work researches the question, reviews documents, or drafts with the matter context and legal sources already in your account. The result returns to the conversation with its sources, so you can keep working without moving information between apps.

Understand Clio Work in Claude and Codex

The Clio for Claude connector and Clio for Codex both run on the same Clio Work connection. The difference is where you work. Codex runs inside the ChatGPT desktop app. Regular ChatGPT chat has no Clio connection.

When you ask Claude or Codex to use Clio Work, Clio Work completes the legal task in its own session and returns the result, the research trail, and the sources. Clio Work brings these capabilities into the conversation:

  • Matter context from documents, correspondence, deadlines, and history.
  • Legal research with links to the underlying authority.
  • Analysis of strengths, weaknesses, risks, and counterarguments.
  • First drafts of memos, letters, clauses, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Clio Manage and Clio Grow records, when the firm subscribes to those products.
  • Court filings and procedural history for US matters.

Firm records stay in Clio. Claude and Codex receive only the information Clio Work returns for the task. Clio Work applies the same access checks to each signed-in person as it does in the Clio Work web app.

Know current limits

  • Conversations from Claude and Codex stay in those apps, separate from your Clio Work conversation history.
  • In Claude, a Word or PDF document arrives as a download link, and Claude asks you to confirm the link before it opens. A Word document can take several minutes to prepare.
  • In Codex, Word and PDF exports are unavailable. To create those files, use Clio Work directly.

Each person connects with their own Clio Identity login, and the same requirements apply to Claude and Codex. The connection is available in every region where Clio Work is available. Clio for Claude is included with Clio Work at no extra cost.

  1. Open the account setup email sent to your Clio account email address.
  2. Accept the invitation in the email.
  3. Return to the Claude desktop app and repeat the steps from step 1.

Set tool permissions

Each Clio Work tool in Claude starts at Needs approval, so Claude asks before it calls the tool.

  1. Go to Customise > Connectors.
  2. Open the Clio connector and go to Tool permissions.
  3. For each tool, choose to allow it, require approval, or block it.

Tip: Keep approval required for any tool that creates, updates, or deletes records in Clio. Approving each call keeps a lawyer in control of the matter record, and reviewing the returned sources before relying on them supports your professional responsibility for the work product.

Troubleshoot setup

Most setup issues come from account licensing, account linking, tool permissions, or an app that needs a restart.

Resolve a Clio Work licence error

If a Clio Work request returns a message that your account has no Clio Work licence, a licence is missing from your user account.

  1. Ask your firm's Clio administrator to assign you a Clio Work licence.
  2. Connect Clio Work again.

Complete account linking

If a message says no Clio Work user is linked to your Clio account, or asks you to sign in through Clio, complete the steps in Link your Clio account on first connection. Connection attempts that send a setup email are limited to five per hour. If you reach the limit, wait one hour and connect again.

Unblock a Clio Work tool in Claude

Claude calls only the tools set to allow or require approval. To change a tool, go to Customise > Connectors and update its setting under Tool permissions.

Load Clio for Codex

Clio for Codex loads after Codex restarts.

  1. Quit Codex completely.
  2. Reopen Codex.
  3. Start a prompt with @Clio.
