Once created, matters can be found categorized by matter status in the main Matters tab and by searching in the search bar. You can edit matters in both Clio Manage and Clio Grow, and you can duplicate matters in Clio Manage.
Edit matters in Clio Manage
Matters are organized by matter status in the main Matters page. Matters are either open, pending, or closed. From within these categories, you can edit matters.
- Go to Matters and click Edit. You can also search for the matter in the search bar and click Edit matter in the matter’s dashboard.
- Make your changes.
- Click Save matter.
Edit matters in Clio Grow
You can edit a matter in Clio Grow in a single matter’s page or in the Pipeline.
- Go to Matters and click the matter name. You can also search for the matter in the search bar.
- Click Edit matter.
- Make your changes.
- Click Save.
- Go to the Pipeline.
- Click Quick view on a matter.
- Click Edit matter.
- Make your changes.
- Click Save.
Change matter statuses for matters in Clio Manage
A matter can be open, pending, or closed. You can change the matter status when editing the matter in the matter form or when viewing the matter’s dashboard.
- Go to Matters and click Edit. You can also search for the matter in the search bar and click Edit matter in the matter’s dashboard.
- Go to the Matter details section.
- Under Matter status, change the status.
- Click Save matter.
- Go to Matters and click the matter’s name. You can also search for the matter in the search bar.
- Once in the matter’s dashboard, scroll down to the Details section.
- Click the box next to Status and change the matter status.
Change matter statuses for matters in Clio Grow
Matters in Clio Grow are organized by matter status and can be found in either the Matters page or by viewing the Pipeline. You can change the matter status when viewing a single matter’s dashboard, when viewing the main Matters overview page, or when viewing the Pipeline.
- Search for the matter in the search bar.
- Change the matter status in the field next to Status.
- Go to Matters.
- Under Status, select a new status.
- Go to the Pipeline.
- Click Quick view on a matter.
- Change the matter status in the field next to Status.
Update matter names and numbers in Clio Manage
If you edit an existing matter and change any information that would normally appear in the matter numbering scheme, you can check a box to ensure the changes are reflected in the matter number. For example, if you change the matter’s open date, and the month and year fields appear in your matter numbering scheme, you can have this change reflected in the matter numbering scheme after saving your edits.
- Go to the matter.
- Click Edit matter.
- Make your changes.
- Check the box for Update matter name/number when saving changes.
- Click Save matter.
Duplicate matters in Clio Manage
You can duplicate a matter from the main Matters tab or from within a matter’s dashboard.
- Go to Matters.
- Find the matter.
- Click the down arrow next to Edit and select Duplicate.
- Select Duplicate.
- Go to the matter’s dashboard.
- Click Duplicate.
- Select Duplicate.
Manually merge matters in Clio Manage
While there is no option to automatically merge two matters, you can manually move data from one matter to another. If you have multiple matters with similar information, you can take manual steps to move data from the secondary matter to the primary matter and then delete the secondary matter once the primary matter has all the necessary information.
Step 1: Review duplicate matters:
- Open each matter in a separate tab in your browser.
- Review the details and data in each matter's subtab to determine which matter is the secondary matter.
- The secondary matter should be the matter that has less data in order to spend less time moving data from one matter to the other.
Step 2: Reassign the secondary matter's data:
- Go to the secondary contact's Dashboard and select a subtab.
- Click Edit on an entry and change the Matter field to the primary matter.
- Time entries: If you are an administrator on your firm account, you can edit the time entries and reassign the matter in bulk. Learn more here.
- Bills and Transactions: You will need to void and/or delete bills and payments before you can edit associated time and expense entries. Once the activities are moved to the primary matter, you can regenerate the bills and recreate the payment transactions. - Documents: You can move documents in bulk to the primary matter. Learn more here.
Step 3: Review data and delete secondary matter
- Review the data in the duplicate matters to ensure that all fields have been appropriately moved to the primary matter that you will keep.
- Go to the secondary matter's Dashboard.
- Click Edit matter.
- Click the down arrow next to Cancel and select Delete matter.
- Check the box confirming the action and then click Delete matter.
