Matters can be exported out of Clio Manage and Clio Grow for reporting purposes. You can also convert matters and their data from Clio Grow to Clio Manage when prospective clients become clients and you are ready to begin billing.
Filter matters in Clio Manage
When filtering matters in Clio Manage, you can filter by contact, responsible attorney, originating attorney, matter notifications by firm user, billable status, matter permissions groups, practice area, matter status, matter tags, and by using custom fields. You can also insert whole keywords into the Filter by keyword field to search for specific matters. To filter matters:
- Go to Matters.
- Optional: In the matter status quick filter, select the appropriate matter status.
- Click Filters, select your filters, and click Apply filters.
- If you are filtering by custom field, you can select multiple custom fields in the filter menu. Once selected and applied, click Columns. Under Custom Fields, select the custom fields that you chose in the filter menu, and then click Update columns. The matter table will show new columns for those custom fields.
Filter matters in Clio Grow
When filtering matters in Clio Grow, you can filter by firm user responsible for the matter, matter status, matter tag, matter type, location, and matters with applied automated workflows. You can also sort results and use the search field to find specific matters.
- Go to Matters.
- Click Apply filters.
- Optional: Use the search box to search for a matter.
- Select your filters.
Export and print matters in Clio Manage
When exporting matters from the main Matters tab, the export will only show data that you entered in the matter form when the matter was created or edited. If you need to export matter-specific information such as activities, transactions, etc., you can do so from that particular subtab.
- Go to Matters.
- Optional: Select one of the All, Open, Pending, or Closed quick filters.
- Optional: Select Filters to apply specific parameters.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Export.
- Select the export format. If you select CSV, you can choose to show all columns from the table or only columns that are visible/checked.
- Click Export.
- Optional: Print the export.
Export matters to CSV in Clio Grow
You can back up your Clio Grow data by exporting a CSV list of your contacts and matters. When exporting matters in Clio Grow, you can export multiple matters from the main Matters page, or you can export specific information for just one matter.
- Go to Matters.
- Select View all, Intake, or Hired.
- Optional: Select Apply filters to apply specific parameters.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Export all matters to CSV.
- Click Send CSV.
- Go to the email and click the link to the CSV file.
- Go to Matters and click the matter’s name. You can also search for the matter in the search bar.
- Click the Matter Options dropdown and select Export to CSV.
Convert from Clio Grow to Clio Manage
When a prospective client becomes a client, you can convert all the matter information from Clio Grow into Clio Manage to begin billing and accepting payments. See below for a list of items and fields that are converted.
- In Clio Grow, go to the matter.
- Click Convert to Clio Manage.
- Add any necessary information.
- Click Convert matter.
- View the matter in Clio Manage by clicking Open matter in Clio Manage. You can also select View in Clio Manage on the matter’s page.

When you convert a matter from Clio Grow to Clio Manage for the first time, the following information is converted.

Note: If you did not previously allow Clio Grow and Clio Manage to sync, only the contact set as the default client in Clio Grow will converted to Clio Manage. With Clio Grow and Clio Managed Synced, contacts marked as clients during conversion are added as clients to the matter in Clio Manage, while contacts not marked as clients during conversion are added as related contacts to the matter.

Linked fields and information
If you sync Clio Grow and Clio Manage, once a matter is converted, the following fields and information remain linked between Clio Grow and Clio Manage so that editing or making changes in either Clio Grow or Manage update fields or information in the other.

Setting permissions in Clio Manage and deleting a matter in either Clio Manage or Clio Grow also result in the following behaviour:
- Permissions in Clio Manage: If a matter is restricted to specific users or groups in Clio Manage, it becomes locked for editing and view-only in Clio Grow until the restriction is changed. While in this state, any changes made in Clio Manage to the synced fields will not sync to Clio Grow. However, if the permissions in Clio Manage are changed again to allow everyone access, any previous changes made will then sync to Clio Grow. Learn more about matter permissions in Clio Manage.
- Deleting a matter: If a matter is deleted in Clio Grow, the matter will also be deleted in Clio Manage and vice versa. Deleted matters can be recovered from Clio Manage.
