Reports in Clio Manage are designed to help your law firm track deliverables and get insights into all aspects of how the firm is performing. Revenue reports provide a comprehensive overview of your firm's financial performance by showing total collected activities and taxes, amounts generated by each originating attorney, and amounts each firm user has billed and collected for each matter. See below for a summary of each revenue report in Clio Manage and what type of information the report offers.
Revenue report
The revenue report is designed to give firms a detailed overview of unbilled, billed, and collected time and expense activities. This report also includes taxes, credit notes, discounted time, and discounted expenses by matter. You can use this report to help quantify key performance metrics on a per user, per client, and per matter basis.
Note: By default, partial payments and credit notes applied to invoices are allocated proportionally across all line items. If you change this setting to allocate partial payments and credit notes in a different way, the following columns will be calculated depending on the selected allocation method: Collected time, Collected expense, Collected tax 1, and Collected tax 2. When generated, this report includes the following categories:
- Matter
- This column lists each of a client's matters.
- Location
- This column shows the value entered in the Location field for a matter.
- Unbilled time
- This column shows the dollar value of unbilled time entries for the matter. Unbilled time entries are time entries that are not generated on any approved bills, including time entries that are not on a bill and time entries that are on bills in draft or bills pending approval.
- Unbilled hours
- This column shows unbilled time entry hours for the matter. Unbilled time entries are time entries that are not generated on any approved bills, including time entries that are not on a bill and time entries that are on bills in draft or bills pending approval
- Unbilled expense
- This column shows the dollar value of unbilled expense entries for the matter. Unbilled expense entries are expenses that are not generated on any approved bills, including expenses that are not on a bill and expenses that are on bills in draft or bills pending approval.
- Billed time
- This column shows the dollar value of billed time entries for the matter. Billed time entries are time entries on approved bills.
- Billed hours
- This column shows billed time entry hours for the matter. Billed time entries are time entries on approved bills.
- Billed expense
- This column shows the dollar value of billed expense entries for the matter. Billed expense entries are expenses on approved bills.
- Billed tax 1
- This column shows the dollar value of your first tax on billed activities for the matter. Billed activities are billable time and expense entries on approved bills.
- Billed tax 2
- This column shows the dollar value of your second tax on billed activities for the matter. Billed activities are billable time and expense entries on approved bills.
- Discounted time
- This column shows the dollar value of billed time entries for the matter that had discounts applied to them. Billed time entries are time entries on approved bills.
- Discounted expense
- This column shows the dollar value of billed expense entries for the matter that had discounts applied to them. Billed expense entries are expenses on approved bills.
- Credit notes
- This column shows the dollar value of billed activities for the matter that had credit notes applied to them. Billed activities are time and expense entries on approved bills.
- Collected time
- This column shows the dollar value of billed time entries on generated bills that have been paid. If a partial payment was applied to a bill with time entries, the payment will be evenly applied across the Collected time, Collected expense, Collected tax, and Collected tax 2 columns.
- Collected expense
- This column shows the dollar value of billed expense entries on generated bills that have been paid. If a partial payment was applied to a bill with expenses, the payment will be evenly applied across the Collected time, Collected expense, Collected tax 1, and Collected tax 2 columns.
- Collected tax 1
- This column shows the dollar value of your first tax on billed activities on generated bills that have been paid. If a partial payment was applied to a bill, the payment will be evenly applied across the Collected time, Collected expense, Collected tax 1, and Collected tax 2 columns.
- Collected tax 2
- This column shows the dollar value of your second tax on billed activities on generated bills that have been paid. If a partial payment was applied to a bill, the payment will be evenly applied across the Collected time, Collected expense, Collected tax 1, and Collected tax 2 columns.
- Collected uncategorized
- This column refers to collected money that is not attached to any matter or client.
- Client total
- This total refers to the total of each column for all of the client's matters.
- No client/No practice area
- When generating the report, you can group your results either by client or practice area. This section will appear at the bottom of the report if you have revenue that is not attached to any client or if you have revenue that is not attached to any practice area.
- Clio Scheduler payments
- This section will appear at the bottom of the report and shows revenue for payments collected through Clio Scheduler appointments.
Originating attorney revenue report
The originating attorney revenue report is designed to help firms visualize and quantify how much revenue each attorney in the firm has brought in. This report includes taxes, interest, fees, and collected time and expense activities. You can use this report to determine your firm’s bonus payout to attorneys.

If you change this setting to allocate partial payments and credit notes in a different way, the following columns will be calculated depending on the selected allocation method: Collected time, Collected expense, Collected tax, and Collected tax 2. When generated, this report includes the following categories:
- Attorney
- This column lists the firm user who is designated as the originating attorney on a matter.
- Collected time
- This column shows the total value of the originating attorney's time entries on bills that have been paid.
- Collected expense
- This column shows the total value of the originating attorney's expense entries on bills that have been paid.
- Collected interest
- This column shows the total value of the interest on bills that have been paid for the originating attorney on the matter.
- Collected tax 1
- This column shows the total value of the first tax on bills that have been paid for the originating attorney on the matter.
- Collected tax 2
- This column shows the total value of the second tax on bills that have been paid for the originating attorney on the matter.
- Total
- This total summarizes the total collected amounts for each column for this originating attorney.
Fee allocation report
The fee allocation report is designed to give firms a detailed view of time and expenses each firm user has billed and collected for each matter. This report also includes accounts receivables and credit notes. You can use this report to determine your firm’s bonus payout to attorneys.
Note: By default, partial payments and credit notes applied to invoices are allocated proportionally across all line items. If you change this setting to allocate partial payments and credit notes in a different way, the columns listed below will be calculated depending on the selected allocation method. - Billed time collected
- Billing time outstanding
- Expense amount collected (CSV only)
- Expense amount outstanding (CSV only)
- Primary tax collected (CSV only)
- Primary tax outstanding (CSV only)
- Secondary tax collected (CSV only)
- Secondary tax outstanding (CSV only)
When generated, this report includes the following categories:
- User: This column lists the firm user who created the activity entry.
- Invoice: This column lists the bill invoice number for the matter.
- Matter: This column lists the matter for which a firm user has billed and collected time and/or expenses.
- Client: This column lists the client for each matter.
- Practice area: This column shows the practice area for the matter. If a practice area was not selected, this column will be blank.
- Responsible attorney: This column shows the responsible attorney assigned to the matter.
- Originating attorney: This column shows the originating attorney assigned to the matter.
- Billed hours: This column shows the total hours that a firm user spent on the activities on a bill that is approved but unpaid or a bill that has been paid. This information is pulled directly from the listed bill invoice. Credit notes and write-offs will not affect the number of billed hours but discounts will affect the number of billed hours.
- Billed time: This column shows the dollar value of the time entries a specific firm user generated on a bill that is approved but unpaid or a bill that has been paid. This information is pulled directly from the listed bill invoice. Credit notes and write-offs will not affect billed time but discounts will affect billed time.
- Billed time allocation: This column refers to the percentage of billed time on a bill that a user is responsible for. If multiple firm users have time entries on a single bill, this column will show the percentage of time that each user is responsible for.
- Collected time: This columns shows the dollar value of the time entries on bills that have been paid.
- Outstanding time: This column shows the dollar value of the time entries on bills that are approved but have not been paid.
- Billed expense: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the dollar value of the expenses a specific firm user generated on a bill that is approved but unpaid or a bill that has been paid.
- Expense allocation: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the percentage of billed expenses on a bill that a user is responsible for. If multiple firm users have expense entries on a single bill, this column will show the percentage of expenses that each user is responsible for.
- Collected expense: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the dollar value of the expense entries on bills that have been paid.
- Outstanding expense: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the dollar value of the expense entries on bills that are approved but have not been paid.
- Total collected: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It is the total amount of payments applied to specific bills.
- Total outstanding: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It is the total amount of unpaid time and expenses on specific bills.
- Interest collected: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of the interest on bills that have been paid.
- Interest outstanding: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of the interest on bills that are approved but have not been paid.
- Collected tax 1: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of the primary tax on bills that have been paid.
- Outstanding tax 1: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of the primary tax on bills that are approved but have not been paid.
- Collected tax 2: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of the secondary tax on bills that have been paid.
- Outstanding tax 2: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of the secondary tax on bills that are approved but have not been paid.
- Collected time allocated to responsible attorney: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of collected time to allocate to the responsible attorney.
- Collected time allocated to originating attorney: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the total dollar value of collected time to allocate to the originating attorney.
- Matter billing method: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the billing method selected on the matter, with options for contingency, flat fee, or hourly.
- Non-billable time amount: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. It shows the dollar value of the non-billable time entries a specific firm user generated for that matter.
- Non-billable time allocation: This column will only appear if this report is generated in CSV format. This column refers to the percentage of non-billable time on a matter that a firm user is responsible for.
