Easily accessing and managing client bills and payments is an important component of running a law practice, whether that is in the office or on-the-go. With Clio's mobile app, you can access client bills and accept payments directly from your mobile device, allowing you to answer client questions, track the status of bills, and collect payment for your work while you are away from your computer.
Note: Only users with billing permissions have access to bills.
Filter and view bills and trust requests
In Clio's mobile app, you can view the details of a generated bill and see a preview of how the bill looks from your client's perspective. You can view bills specific to a single matter directly from that matter's page or view bills across all your matters from the main Bills tab. When filtering bills, you can filter by bill status or the type of bill.
Note: You cannot generate or share bills in the mobile app. If you need to generate new bills or send bills to clients, you will need to access Clio from a web browser.
- Go to the Home tab, select Matters, and then select the matter. You can also click Filter matters to narrow your matter results or search for the matter's number or client name in the search bar.
- Under Matter contents, click Bills.

Collect payments using tap to pay
On Clio's mobile app, you can use your iPhone or Android device to quickly accept payments in-person with a tap, without having to purchase and maintain a payment terminal. Your client can complete the payment by holding their credit card, debit card, or digital wallet (e.g. Apple Pay or Google Pay) near your phone. The payment will automatically be deposited into your primary operating account in Clio Manage in US dollars.
Note: You can only set up this feature if you have Clio Payments enabled and are located in US on the US server. If you are using an iPhone, you need an iPhone XS or later with iOS 16.0 or higher and have set up a passcode or Face ID/Touch ID. If you are using an Android device, your device cannot be jailbroken or have modifications, and you need Android 12 or above and have Google Mobile Services.
Before accepting bill payments using tap to pay, an administrator on your account needs to activate the feature first. Setup is only required once and by one administrator for the whole firm account. Once set up, administrators and firm users with billing permissions can accept bill payments on their iPhones.
- Download the latest version of Clio's mobile app.
- In the mobile app, click the gear icon in the top left for the settings menu.
- Select Tap to Pay.
- Click Allow location access and then enable location services.
- Accept the terms and conditions by linking your Apple ID and then wait for tap to pay to finish activating.
- Linking your Apple ID authorizes your phone to use tap to pay and does not link the credit card connected to your Apple ID.
If your client needs to make an in-person payment without applying the payment to a bill (e.g., if you are holding your client’s money for a retainer), firm users with administrator and billing permission can use their iPhones to accept a payment with Tap to Pay to deposit funds into your firm's primary operating account.
- In the mobile app, click the + icon.
- Under Create new, select Payment.
- Select Tap to pay
- Enter a payment Amount.
- Select Tap to Pay.
- Your client can pay their bill by holding their card or digital wallet over your iPhone.
- The payment will automatically be deposited into the Clio Manage primary operating account.
Once a bill is generated, administrators and firm users with billing permissions can use their Android phones to accept in-person bill payments from their clients with tap to pay.
Note: You cannot accept trust request payments using tap to pay.
- In the mobile app, open the bill.
- Click New payment.
- If this is your first time using tap to pay, click Allow location access and then enable location services.
- Confirm the bill's payment amount and then click Tap to Pay.
- Your client can pay their bill by holding their card or digital wallet near your Android phone.

Collect payments using QR codes
If you cannot use tap to pay on Clio's mobile app (i.e. if you reside outside of the US and/or are using an older device that does not support tap to pay), you can accept bill and trust request payments in-person using QR codes instead, giving your clients more options to pay. When you open a bill or trust request on the mobile app, your client can scan the QR code and enter their card details or pay using Apple Pay or Google Pay. You can also generate QR codes for simple payments not connected to any bills.
If your client is paying their bill or trust request in-person, you can generate a QR code on the mobile app to have your client scan it with their mobile device and then enter their payment details to pay the bill or trust request.
- In the mobile app, open the bill or trust request.
- Click New payment.
- If you have set up and are using tap to pay, select QR code. If you are not using tap to pay, you will not see this screen.
- If you have multiple bank accounts, select the one that you want to deposit the payment funds into. If you only have one bank account set up, you will not see this screen.
- Your client can pay their bill or trust request by scanning the QR code using their mobile device.
- The payment will automatically be deposited into the Clio Manage bank account you previously selected in US dollars for US accounts and Canadian dollars for Canadian accounts.
