Clio offers several features that help you get paid faster. You can set up payment plans to receive regular payments toward a client’s outstanding balance and set up bill reminders to ensure your clients are notified about outstanding bills. In addition to these options, this article provides information about how to set up autocharging options for cards and other payment methods stored in Clio for bills that were sent out to customers. This reduces the administrative load of manually charging payment methods or chasing down outstanding payments.
Create autocharge schedule
You can set up unique autocharge rules for different client types.
- In Clio Manage, click Settings > Billing > Autocharge.
- Click Add schedule.
- Fill the modal.
- Enter a unique and descriptive name for the schedule.
- Select a trigger.
- Days after bill issue date: By selecting this option, the payment method stored for the bill recipient will be charged the amount on the bill the set number of days after the bill was issued.
- On bill approval: The method will be charged when the bill is approved.
- On bill due date: The method will be charged when the bill is approved.
- Select an account to deposit funds in from your list of accounts.
- Click Create.
Your schedule now appears in the Autocharge section. You can now apply this schedule to any of your clients.
Edit or delete autocharge schedule
You can edit or delete existing autocharge schedules.
Edit
- In Clio Manage, click Settings > Billing > Autocharge.
- In the Autocharge section, find the relevant schedule, then click the vertical ellipses for it.
- Select Edit schedule.
- Update your information.
- Click Save.
Delete
- In Clio Manage, click Settings > Billing > Autocharge.
- In the Autocharge section, find the relevant schedule, then click the vertical ellipses for it.
- Select Delete schedule.
- Click Delete again to confirm the action.
Apply existing autocharge schedule to a contact
To apply an autocharge schedule to a contact:
- In Clio Manage, click Contacts, then select the relevant contact.

In the contact's dashboard, in the Billing information section, switch the Autocharge toggle on.
Note: If the contact does not yet have a payment method added to Clio, click Request payment method or Add card to first add a payment method. - In the modal, select one of your existing autocharge schedules. You can also click Create schedule to create a new schedule.
- Click Turn on.
You can also apply the schedule from the Contacts table:
- In Clio Manage, click Contacts.

For the relevant contact, switch the Autocharge column's toggle to on.
Note: If your Autocharge column is not visible, click Columns, check the Autocharge box, then click Update columns.Tip: Click Filters, then use the Autocharge and/or Autocharge profile fields to narrow your list of contacts.
Change the autocharge rule for a client
To change the autocharge schedule that applies to a contact:
- In Clio Manage, click Contacts, then select the relevant contact.
- In the contact's dashboard, in the Billing information section, click the vertical ellipses, then click Change autocharge profile.
- In the modal, select one of your existing autocharge schedules. You can also click Create schedule to create a new schedule before returning to apply it.
- Click Turn on.
Tip: You can also use shortcuts to reach this modal. When viewing your list of Contacts in Clio Manage, if your visible columns include the Autocharge column, click the information icon in the column, then click Change schedule to open the modal.
Pause or resume upcoming autocharges
To make a temporary or permanent change to the next autocharge event associated with a contact, you can pause or resume the charge.
From the main Contacts page
- In Clio Manage, click Contacts.
- For the relevant contact, in the Autocharge column, switch the toggle on or off.
From a contact's dashboard
- In Clio Manage, go to Contacts, then select your contact.
- In the Billing information section, switch the Autocharge toggle on or off.
From Settings
- In Clio Manage, click Settings > Billing > Autocharge.
- For the relevant contact, switch the toggle on or off.
