After running a search in Clio Library, you can narrow results by jurisdiction, content type, and citation treatment to quickly surface the most relevant authorities. Folders let you organize research by matter or area of law so your team can find and reuse work across cases.
Navigate and filter search results
The results page is organized into three columns: the left panel for refining, the center for documents, and the right for metadata and actions.
Apply filters
Use the left-hand panel to set the boundaries of your research.
- General filters
Narrow by content type, jurisdiction, and date.
- Jurisdiction-specific filters
These appear dynamically based on the selected region, such as court, reported series, and category.
- Cited Authorities filter
Shows only documents that cite a specific authority. Select Cited Authorities, check the relevant boxes, choose Any or All, and click Apply.
Refine the view
- To add new keywords to your current filtered set, use the Search within results field at the top of the filter panel.
- To reorder results, select Most Cited, Most Recent, Relevance, or Most Visited from the sort control.
- To see exactly how your search terms appear in a document, click the Show matching paragraphs icon next to the document preview.
Create and use folders
Folders help you organize research projects by matter name or area of law. You can add a document to a folder directly from the document viewer, or manage your folders from the left navigation panel.
Note: Organizing research into matter-specific folders reduces duplication across your team and creates a reusable reference library for similar cases. Attorneys handling recurring matter types benefit from a shared folder structure that accumulates reliable authority over time.
- When viewing a document in Clio Library, click the Add to folder icon in the top-right toolbar.
- In the Folders modal, select an existing folder, or click New Folder to create a new folder and enter a folder name.
- Click Apply.
- Click Folders in the left navigation panel to view all saved documents organized by folder.
- To create a new folder, click + New Folder.
- In the Create Folder modal, type a folder name.
- Click Create.
