Consistent, on-brand bill messages reduce client confusion about what they owe and support your firm's collection efforts. Bill message templates control the subject line and body text a client sees when you send a bill or a reminder, and autofill fields pull in bill, contact, matter, and firm details automatically. Setting up templates here means every bill and reminder your firm sends carries the right message without retyping it each time.
Note: Only users with administrator or billing permissions can create, edit, or delete bill message templates.
Understand default and custom templates
Clio provides four default bill message templates: Bills, Trust, Outstanding Balance, and Reminders. Default templates remain permanently available for editing and duplicating. Create up to 30 custom templates of your own, and edit, duplicate, or delete any custom template you create.
Create a bill message template
Tip: Create a template while sending a bill. In the send bill window, click New template when selecting a template.
- Go to Settings > Billing > Bill message templates.
- Click Create a new bill message template.
- Complete the template's name, subject, and body.
- Click Add autofill fields to insert bill recipient, contact, matter, or billing details that populate automatically when you send the bill.
- Click Save template.
Edit, duplicate, or delete a bill message template
Note: Open bill message templates from Settings, or directly from the send bill window.
Edit a template
- Go to Settings > Billing > Bill message templates.
- Under Actions, click Edit.
- Update the template's name, subject, or body.
- Click Save template.
Duplicate or delete a template
- Go to Settings > Billing > Bill message templates.
- Under Actions, click the arrow, then click Duplicate or Delete.
- To confirm a deletion, click Delete template in the pop-up.
