Preview and Review Documents

You can read a document and review everything recorded about it without downloading the file or opening another application. The preview panel shows the document alongside four tabs covering its details, versions, comments, and history.

Preview a document

  1. Go to Documents and find the file.
  2. Click the file name to open the preview panel.
  3. Use the up and down arrows at the top of the panel to move between documents without closing the preview.
  4. Select a tab to see more about the document:
    • Details: Status, ID, Matter, Contact, Classification, Last modified, Uploaded by, Received at, Author, Format and size, Category, and Tags.
    • Versions: The current version, previous versions, and the option to upload a new version.
    • Comments: Comments added in Clio, and any comments contained in the Microsoft Word file.
    • History: A record of activity on the document.

Tip: Collapse the details panel to give the document more room, or expand the preview to full width. Press Ctrl + P to print.

Add document comments

Select the Comments tab to discuss a document with your colleagues.

  1. Open the document and select the Comments tab.
  2. Enter your comment in the Add a comment field.
  3. Click Comment.

If the document is a Microsoft Word file that contains comments, those appear separately at the top of the tab. Click View to read them.

Open a document

Previewing a document on the Documents page allows you to read it, but not edit it. When you need to make edits, open the file's actions menu, select Open in, and choose where you want to work on it. Your options include:

  • Document Editor: Edit the document in your browser without leaving Clio. Your changes save back to the matter or contact automatically.
  • Clio Drive: Open the document in the desktop application it belongs to, such as Microsoft Word, and save your changes straight back to Clio.
  • Vincent: Send the document to Vincent to review, summarize, or analyze it rather than edit it.

Tip: The option you choose last becomes your default. From then on, double-clicking a file opens it there automatically.
