Legal Research
Check if a postnup holds up when a spouse signed without a lawyer
Transactional
When is a postnuptial agreement enforceable if one or both spouses signed without independent legal counsel? Identify the governing statutory framework and leading cases. Explain the standards courts apply to voluntariness and duress, disclosure, and fairness or unconscionability. Address the weight given to the absence of counsel and any procedural safeguards that can cure it.
Find the language that validly waives retirement account rights
Transactional
What separation-agreement language is needed to validly waive a spouse’s current and future rights to the other spouse’s retirement benefits? Provide example clauses with placeholders for qualified plans governed by ERISA, such as a 401(k) or pension, that address QDRO waiver and consent issues. Provide example clauses for non-ERISA accounts, such as an IRA.
Summarize case law on valuing a family business
Transactional
Summarize the case law on valuing closely held or family-owned businesses in divorce. Focus on the valuation approaches courts accept or reject, such as capitalization of earnings, discounted cash flow, market or comparable sales, and asset-based methods. Explain how courts choose among competing expert methods and how they treat marketability and minority discounts and personal versus enterprise goodwill.
List the best-interests factors courts apply in custody cases
Litigation
What statutory best interests of the child factors do courts apply in custody and parenting-time disputes? List the primary factors with brief descriptions. Cite the controlling statutes and leading appellate authority.
Confirm the burden of proof for establishing paternity
Litigation
What is the burden of proof and legal standard for establishing paternity when the alleged father denies parentage? Identify the controlling statutes and leading cases. Explain how the standard differs by proceeding type, such as a paternity petition or support proceeding, and by evidence offered, such as genetic testing versus acknowledgment, cohabitation, or conduct.
Check the standard for contempt when visitation is denied
Litigation
What is the legal standard for holding a parent in civil contempt for willfully refusing to comply with a court-ordered parenting-time schedule? Identify the required elements, including notice, clarity of the order, willfulness, and prejudice. Describe typical evidentiary showings and defenses, such as safety concerns, child refusal, ambiguity, or impossibility.
Document Analysis
Spot drafting errors and risks in a prenup
Transactional
Review the attached prenuptial agreement for drafting errors, internal inconsistencies, ambiguities, and enforceability risks. Identify missing or unclear definitions, conflicting provisions, problematic waivers, procedural or formality issues, and any terms likely to be deemed unconscionable or contrary to public policy.
Flag possible dissipation in bank statements
Transactional
Review the attached bank statements and extract all transactions into a structured list. Group them as income and credits, internal and external transfers, large or unusual withdrawals, and potential dissipation. For each flagged entry, briefly explain why it’s flagged and what follow-up is needed, such as requesting a receipt, identifying the payee, or tracing the destination account. Output as a table.
Compare proposed parenting plans
Transactional
Compare the legal and practical differences among the attached or proposed parenting plans. Focus on legal custody and decision-making authority. Cover the physical custody schedule. Address holiday and vacation rotation. Review relocation provisions. Note any other provisions that materially affect custody rights or enforceability.
Find contradictions in a custody deposition
Litigation
Review the attached custody-dispute deposition transcript and identify internal contradictions in the witness’s testimony and prior inconsistent statements compared to other testimony or exhibits in the record.
Check communications against a no-contact order
Litigation
Review the communications log for this matter and cross-reference it against the court order or restraining order in the file. List each communication that potentially violates a no-contact provision or communication restriction, citing the specific order language implicated.
Build a timeline of the other side’s allegations
Litigation
From the opposing party’s complaint, extract every allegation with an explicit or reasonably inferable date and present it as a chronological timeline. Use a table with columns for date or timeframe, a one-sentence summary of the alleged event, complaint paragraph citations, and legal relevance.
Skills
Skills save the way your firm does a task, so anyone at your firm gets the same result.
Get consistent, high-quality work from everyone at your firm, every time. A skill saves a task you repeat in your firm’s format and standards, so anyone on your team can run it. Use skills for document analyses, client letters, and strategy recommendations.
Analyze accounts as of the date of separation
Builds a table across a client's financial account statements that shows each account's balance as of the date of separation. It reconstructs that balance from the transactions when the statement doesn't print it, and flags unusual transactions or charges for follow-up. Save the table format as a template and reuse it on every divorce matter.
I reviewed the financial statements in this matter. The date of separation is March 15, 2026.
The joint checking account at First National Bank ending in 4821 shows a balance of $18,342.17 on the March 15 statement. The savings account ending in 4830 does not have a statement for March 15. The most recent statement shows $61,400.00 on February 28, and there was an $8,500.00 transfer on March 10. The Northgate credit card ending in 1004 shows a balance of $6,480.33 owing after the charges through March 15.
Some transactions may need follow-up:
- A $4,200.00 jewelry purchase on the credit card on March 2
- An $8,500.00 transfer out of savings on March 10
You may want to request additional statements to confirm these balances.

Create This Skill
Create a skill that reviews the financial account statements in this matter and builds a table with one row per account. For each account, show the institution, account type, last four digits, and the balance as of the date of separation. If no statement shows a balance on that exact date, calculate it from the closest prior balance and the transactions between that date and the date of separation, and note that it was calculated. Flag any transactions that are unusually large, unusual for the account, or made close to the date of separation, and list them below the table with the date, amount, and reason flagged.
Write a prenup advisory letter for your client
Drafts the client advisory letter that goes with a prenuptial agreement, using your firm's own sample letter as the template. It explains the agreement's key terms in plain language and skips the enforceability analysis, so the output is ready for client review. Every letter follows the same structure, tone, and sign-off.
Summary of Prenuptial Agreement
Overview. The agreement between the parties addresses the classification of separate and marital property, spousal maintenance, and the disposition of assets upon dissolution or death.
Property. Pursuant to Article 4, premarital assets, including real property and business interests, are designated as separate property. Appreciation of separate property is likewise excluded from the marital estate (Section 4.3).
Maintenance. Article 7 provides a conditional waiver of spousal maintenance for marriages of less than five years' duration.
Enforceability analysis. Courts generally require full financial disclosure, independent counsel, and execution free of duress. Whether the waiver in Article 7 would be upheld depends on the circumstances at the time of enforcement and applicable case law.
Recommendation. Further review is recommended prior to execution.
Harbor & Lane Family Law
200 King Street West, Suite 1400 | (416) 555-0142
Dear Jordan,
Thank you for sending the draft agreement. This letter explains its key terms in plain language so you can review it before we meet.
Separate and marital property
Anything you each owned before the marriage stays yours, including your condo and Sam's business.
Spousal support
Neither of you will pay support if the marriage lasts less than five years.
Terms to pay close attention to
Section 4.3 treats any growth in Sam's business as separate, even if you help run it.
Sincerely,
Alex Morgan, Partner
Create This Skill
Create a skill that reads the prenuptial agreement in this matter and drafts a client advisory letter. Use my uploaded sample advisory letter as the format template and match its structure, headings, tone, and sign-off exactly. Explain in plain language how the agreement treats separate and marital property, spousal support, and what happens on divorce or death, and point out any terms the client should pay close attention to. Do not include an enforceability analysis.
Turn consult notes into a strategy recommendation
Turns the notes from a first consult call and a completed strategy intake form into a legal strategy recommendation for the new lead. It summarizes the facts, identifies the legal issues, lists what's still unknown, and maps out a path forward. Every lead gets a consistent recommendation, and attorneys no longer write it up by hand after each call.
Taylor Brooks has been married for 11 years and has two children, ages 8 and 5. Taylor's spouse moved out in August. The couple owns their home jointly and the spouse has a workplace pension. Taylor would like the children to live primarily with them.
The main issues appear to be custody and parenting time, child support, division of the home and pension, and possibly spousal support. It is not clear from the notes exactly when the parties separated or what the spouse currently earns.
One approach would be to seek a temporary parenting schedule early and consider mediation for the property issues. A pension valuation may also be helpful before any settlement discussions take place.
Strategy recommendation: Taylor Brooks
Based on consult call notes (Oct 7, 2026) and strategy intake form
Summary of Facts
Taylor has been married for 11 years and has two children, ages 8 and 5. Taylor's spouse moved out in August. The couple owns their home jointly, and the spouse has a workplace pension. Taylor wants the children to live primarily with them.
Legal Issues
Custody and parenting time for both children, child support, division of the family home and the pension, and possible spousal support.
Information Still Needed
• Exact date of separation. Notes say "August" only.
• The spouse's current income
Recommended Strategy
Open the case with a request for a temporary parenting schedule so the children's routine is set early. Propose mediation for the home and pension to keep costs down. Get a pension valuation before any settlement talks.
Create This Skill
Create a skill that reads my uploaded consult call notes and completed strategy intake form, then drafts a legal strategy recommendation for the potential client. Include these sections: Summary of Facts, Legal Issues, Information Still Needed, Recommended Strategy, and Next Steps. Base everything on the uploaded documents, and list any unclear or missing facts under Information Still Needed instead of guessing. Write in plain language I can adapt for a follow-up email to the lead.
Draft a pre-trial memo from the matter file
Drafts a pre-trial memo for the judge from the full matter file.
Create This Skill
Create a skill that reads the matter file and drafts a pre-trial memo using my firm's sample memo as the format. Include the parties and counsel, procedural history with key dates, a neutral factual background, contested issues, witnesses with expected testimony, exhibits with short relevance notes, and open legal issues. Cite the source for every fact. Flag gaps instead of guessing, and end with a short trial prep checklist.
Fill the forms that open a divorce
Fills the petitioner-side forms that open a divorce from matter data and firm templates.
Create This Skill
Create a skill that pulls party and case details from this matter and fills in my uploaded divorce templates for my state. Include and complete the child-related forms only if the matter shows minor children. When it's done, list any required fields it couldn't fill, grouped by form.
Calendar deadlines when a Request for Order is filed
Calendars the hearing, response deadline, and reply deadline whenever a Request for Order is filed.
Create This Skill
Create a skill that runs whenever a Request for Order is filed. It should add the hearing to the calendar, create a response task due 9 court days before the hearing, and create a reply task due 5 court days before. Count only court days and skip court holidays. If the hearing is continued, update every related date automatically.
Fill a hearing cover sheet with the attorney's unavailable dates
Fills a county hearing cover sheet from the matter and lists the attorney's unavailable dates from their Clio calendar.
Create This Skill
Create a skill that fills in my county's hearing cover sheet for this matter. Pull the party names, attorney of record, assigned judge, and case type from the matter. Then check the assigned attorney's Clio calendar and list every date and time they're unavailable within the hearing window I give you.
Draft Templates
Draft documents from a prompt, or fill your firm’s own templates with details from the matter.
Get from a blank page to a first draft in minutes. Describe the document, and Clio Work drafts it from your matter’s facts and your jurisdiction’s law. Or turn your firm’s own documents into templates that fill in party names, dates, and terms from the matter.
Draft from a prompt
Draft a marital settlement agreement
Transactional
Write a marital settlement agreement under my jurisdiction's law addressing equitable property division, spousal support with duration and modification terms, and a detailed parenting plan with legal and physical custody provisions.
Draft a prenup from the matter record
Transactional
Draft a prenuptial agreement under my jurisdiction's law that protects our client's interests, using the intake notes, both parties' financial disclosures, and attorney meeting notes in this matter. Cover separate and marital property, premarital assets such as business interests, real estate, and retirement accounts, debts, spousal support, and the marital home on divorce or death. Attach each party's financial disclosure as a schedule, and include acknowledgments of independent counsel and voluntary signing. Use only facts from the matter, insert bracketed placeholders for anything missing, and list them at the end.
Draft a QDRO to divide a retirement account
Transactional
Draft a qualified domestic relations order under my jurisdiction's law to divide the retirement plan described in the marital settlement agreement in this matter. Use the plan name, participant and alternate payee details, valuation date, and division percentage from the agreement. Address survivor benefits and how gains and losses are allocated after the valuation date. Insert bracketed placeholders for anything missing, including the plan administrator's required language, and list them at the end.
Draft a motion to modify child support
Litigation
Draft a motion to modify child support, arguing that the obligor's roughly 60% income increase since the original order four years ago is a substantial change in circumstances warranting an upward modification under the applicable state guidelines.
Write a client status update
Litigation
Review the current matter, including but not limited to the petition, affidavit for temporary relief, parenting plan, statement of net worth, attorney meeting notes, and any communications relating to parenting or support. Prepare a client-friendly status update for our client that explains: where the case currently stands, the major custody and financial issues we are working on, what documents or information we still need from them, what the likely next legal steps are, and any upcoming priorities they should be aware of. Write it in plain English, but keep it accurate and professional.
Draft an opposition to a relocation motion
Litigation
Draft a response opposing the other parent's motion to relocate with the children, using the motion, the current parenting plan, and the attorney meeting notes in this matter. Apply my jurisdiction's relocation factors and argue that the move would disrupt the children's school and community ties and reduce our client's parenting time. Propose an alternative schedule in case the court grants the move, and flag any facts we still need to support each argument.
Build your firm templates
Marital Settlement Agreement
Most firms start every divorce settlement from the same agreement. Upload your firm's version, and Clio Work turns the party names, dates of marriage and separation, assets, debts, and support amounts into fields it fills from each matter. Then review the suggested rules so the parenting plan and spousal support sections only appear when they apply.
Child Custody Agreement
Custody agreements repeat the same core terms, but the children, schedules, and court details change every time. Upload your firm's agreement, and Clio Work turns each child's name and date of birth, both parents, the court, and the case number into fields. Then review the suggested rules so sections like the holiday schedule and relocation terms only appear when they apply.
Spousal Support Agreement
Support agreements depend on exact figures and dates, so retyping them invites costly mistakes. Upload your firm's agreement, and Clio Work turns both spouses' names, the support amount, the payment schedule, and the start and end dates into fields. Then review the suggested rules so the review and modification terms only appear when support has a fixed end date.
Family Law Engagement Letter
Every new family law client gets the same engagement letter, with different parties and fees. Upload your firm’s letter, and Clio Work turns the client name, opposing party, matter type, retainer amount, and hourly rates into fields it fills from each matter. Then review the suggested rules so the custody scope paragraph only appears when the matter involves children.
Petition for Dissolution
Most divorces start from the same petition, so retyping party and marriage details wastes time and invites errors. Upload your firm’s version, and Clio Work turns both parties’ names and addresses, the dates of marriage and separation, the county, and the case number into fields. Then review the suggested rules so the custody and child support sections only appear when there are minor children.
Financial Disclosure Request Letter
Disclosure requests to opposing counsel follow the same format on every matter. Upload your firm’s letter, and Clio Work turns opposing counsel, the client name, the case number, and the response deadline into fields. Then review the suggested rules so the business records request only appears when either party owns a business.
Visualizations
Visualizations make charts, calendars, and diagrams from your matter data.
Build the exact view you need, right when you need it. Describe it in plain language, and Clio Work builds an interactive tool from your matter data, such as a case chronology or a settlement calculator. Download it and share it with clients and colleagues.
Chart how the marital assets divide
Financial disclosures spread assets and debts across dozens of pages, so it's hard to see who walks away with what under a proposed settlement. This chart pulls every asset and debt from the disclosures in your matter and shows each one's value and how it splits between the parties, with a net total for each side. Use it on divorces with shared property, such as a family home, retirement accounts, or joint debts, especially in settlement talks and mediation.

Sample values for illustration. Your chart is built from the disclosures in your matter.
Create This Visualization
Read the financial disclosures in this matter and build a chart of all marital assets and debts, showing the value of each and the split between both parties under the proposed settlement.
Compare custody proposals on a calendar
Competing custody proposals describe schedules in dense paragraphs, so clients and courts struggle to see how much time each parent actually gets. This calendar puts both proposals side by side, color-coded by parent, and counts each parent's overnights per cycle and per year, with every count linked to the provision it comes from. Use it on contested custody matters with two proposed parenting schedules, especially for client meetings, mediation, and hearings.

| Parent B | 182 (50%) | 104 (29%) | -78 |
Sample values for illustration. Each square is one overnight. In Clio Work, each count links to the provision it comes from in your matter.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive side-by-side calendar comparing the two custody proposals in this matter, color-coded by parent. Tally each parent’s overnights per cycle and per year, and show the overnight percentage and the difference between the proposals. Link every count to the provision in the stipulation or proposal it comes from. Use the custody stipulation and the opposing proposal in this matter.
Map the family behind a matter
In blended families, former partners, half-siblings, and step-children are scattered across intake notes and pleadings, so it's hard to track who is related to whom. This tree maps everyone in the case, shows which household each child is in, and flags missing or conflicting information, such as a parent who isn't named in the file. Use it on custody and support matters involving blended families, multiple households, or children from more than one relationship.
Sample family for illustration. Your tree is built from the documents in your matter.
Create This Visualization
Using the intake notes, pleadings, and financial disclosures in this matter, build a family tree of everyone relevant to this custody and support case. Show each parent with their former and current partners, and every child with their birth year. Label how each child is related to each adult, such as biological child, step-child, or half-sibling. Highlight the children who are the subject of this matter, and flag any missing or conflicting information, such as a parent who isn't named in the file.
Lay out a case timeline
Lays out the key events of a matter on one visual timeline, from marriage to the next court date.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive timeline of the key dates in this matter, including marriage, separation, filings, motions, hearings, and orders. For each event, include a short label, a one-sentence description, and the source document it came from. Flag any dates that are unclear or conflict between sources.
Show a parenting plan on a 12-month calendar
Turns a proposed parenting plan into a month-by-month calendar so clients can see which days the children spend with each parent.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive 12-month parenting-time calendar from the parenting plan, color-coded by parent. Mark exchange days, holidays, and school breaks, and show which parent has each one. Include monthly and annual overnight totals for each parent. Flag anything in the plan that's too vague or conflicting to assign a day.
Compare support across scenarios
Compares child or spousal support outcomes across different income or custody scenarios.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive side-by-side chart comparing support amounts under three scenarios I specify. Use the parties' incomes and parenting time from this matter. Ask me for any missing inputs you need to calculate support. Show each scenario's total and a clear breakdown of the components and assumptions behind it.
Chart spending around the date of separation
Charts account activity over time to spot unusual spending or possible asset dissipation before or after separation.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive chart of monthly spending by category from the uploaded bank and credit card statements. Mark the date of separation on the chart. Flag transactions well above the normal spending pattern and explain the threshold you used. Include a table of flagged transactions with the date, payee, amount, category, and reason, plus a short summary of how spending changed before and after separation.
Chart parenting-time interference on a timeline
Parenting-time interference shows up across texts, emails, and declarations, so the pattern is hard to see. This timeline color-codes each reported incident by type and links it to its source. You can then turn it into a relationship map of the key parties and save it as a Skill to run on any new matter.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive color-coded timeline of every reported parenting-time interference incident in this matter. Color each incident by type, such as a missed exchange, a late return, or a blocked call. Show the date, the parties involved, and the source document for each incident, and flag any incident with only one source. Then create a relationship map of the key parties in this matter and how they connect to each incident.
Map parenting incidents to effects on the child
Custody arguments often claim a parent's conduct affects the child, but the evidence sits in school records, counseling notes, and declarations. This evidence map connects each reported incident to any documented effect on the child and labels who observed it. It keeps timing separate from cause, so the map shows only what the record supports.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive evidence map connecting reported parenting incidents in this matter to any documented effects on the child, including school attendance, punctuality, counseling observations, and emotional wellbeing. Separate direct observations, parent reports, child statements, and professional observations. Distinguish timing from established causation. Flag inconsistent dates and missing corroboration. Do not diagnose parental alienation or infer intent.
Compare ordered parenting time with what happened
A custody order sets the schedule, but exchanges in practice drift from it. This calendar shows ordered time, agreed changes, and reported deviations in separate colors, with each entry tied to the order or agreement behind it. It also marks what still needs confirming before you rely on it.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive parenting-time calendar from the custody order and documented scheduling agreements in this matter. Overlay reported exchanges, actual pickup and return times, and alleged deviations. Use separate colors for ordered time, agreed changes, reported deviations, and unknown information. Do not infer a rotation or exchange time the order does not state. Cite the supporting record for each entry and list what must be confirmed.
Trace disclosed assets back to the source
Asset disclosures rarely show how money moved between accounts or owners. This asset tree groups every disclosed asset by owner and type, traces transfers, and links each item to the document it came from. Anything with unclear tracing or ownership is flagged for follow-up.
Create This Visualization
Using visualizations, create an interactive asset tree for this matter. Categorize all disclosed assets by owner and type, and trace transfers between accounts and owners. Flag anything with unclear tracing or ownership, and link every item to the document it came from.
