Custom fields are additional fields of information that you may need to capture for a contact or matter that Clio does not automatically capture during contact and matter creation. Custom field sets are a collection of individual custom fields that are grouped together. Field sets can be added to a contact or matter for a specific practice area.

Note: All users can use custom fields, but only users with administrator permissions can create, edit, or delete custom fields and custom field sets.

You can create individual custom fields for matters and contacts. When creating a custom field, you can choose to make the field a default field and select whether it is a required field. A default field will appear on all contacts or matters and must be completed. A required field cannot be left blank.

Note: If you need to uncheck the default option from a default custom field, and the custom field is part of a field set, remove the default option from the field set first.
  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter Custom Fields or Contact Custom Fields.
  3. Select Individual Fields.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Complete the custom field details. The Name field is limited to 32 characters.
