Edit Custom Fields in Clio Manage

You can edit custom fields and field sets directly from your account settings. This allows you to update the field name, set the field as required, or make it a default option. If you need to edit the value of a field (the data entered into it), you will need to navigate directly to the matter or contact card.

Note: All users can use custom fields, but only users with administrator permissions can create, edit, or delete custom fields and custom field sets.
Important: If you edit the name of a custom field, the name change will be reflected in all existing contacts or matters with that custom field.

Edit custom fields and field sets

You can search for a specific field or field set, or edit its details from your settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter custom fields or Contact custom fields.
  3. Select Custom fields or Custom field sets.
  4. Find your custom field or field set and click Edit.

Tip: To quickly find a field, type the field name into the search bar.
  5. Make your updates, then click Save.

Modify order of custom fields

If you need to change the order in which your custom fields appear when selecting them on a matter or contact, you can modify their order in your custom field settings.

Note: Custom fields in field sets are ordered based on the individual custom field order, not the order that they were added to the field set.
  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter custom fields or Contact custom fields.
  3. Click Modify order.
  4. Drag and drop the custom fields to rearrange them, then click Save order.
