Filter, Export, and Convert Matters

Matters can be exported out of Clio Manage and Clio Grow for reporting purposes. You can also convert matters and their data from Clio Grow to Clio Manage when prospective clients become clients and you are ready to begin billing.

Filter matters Clio Manage

When filtering matters in Clio Manage, you can filter by contact, responsible attorney, originating attorney, matter notifications by firm user, billable status, matter permissions groups, practice area, matter status, and by using custom fields. You can also insert whole keywords into the Filter by keyword field to search for specific matters. To filter matters:

  1. Go to Matters.
  2. Optional: Select the appropriate matter status subtab.
  3. Click Filters, select your filters, and click Apply filters.

 

Filter matters in Clio Grow

When filtering matters in Clio Grow, you can filter by firm user responsible for the matter, matter status, matter type, and location. You can also sort results and use the search field to find specific matters. 

  1. Go to Matters.
  2. Click Apply filters.
  3. Optional: Use the search box to search for a matter.
  4. Select your filters.

 

Export and print matters in Clio Manage 

When exporting matters from the main Matters tab, the export will only show data that you entered in the matter form when the matter was created or edited. If you need to export matter-specific information such as activities, transactions, etc., you can do so from that particular subtab. 

  1. Go to Matters.
  2. Optional: Select one of the All, Open, Pending, or Closed subtabs.
  3. Optional: Select Filters to apply specific parameters.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Export.
  5. Select the export format. If you select CSV, you can choose to show all columns from the table or only columns that are visible/checked.
  6. Click Export.
  7. Optional: Print the export.

 

Export matters to CSV in Clio Grow

You can back up your Clio Grow data by exporting a CSV list of your contacts and matters. When exporting matters in Clio Grow, you can export multiple matters from the main Matters page, or you can export specific information for just one matter.

Export multiple matters Export single matter
  1. Go to Matters.
  2. Select View all, Intake, or Hired.
  3. Optional: Select Apply filters to apply specific parameters.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Export all matters to CSV.
  5. Click Send CSV.
  6. Go to the email and click the link to the CSV file.

 

Convert from Clio Grow to Clio Manage

When a prospective client becomes a client, you can convert all the matter information from Clio Grow into Clio Manage to begin billing and accepting payments.

Tip: If you are set up with single sign-on (SSO), you can navigate easily between Clio Grow and Clio Manage by clicking the Clio Grow or Clio Manage link in the header.

Step 1: Set up the Clio Grow and Clio Manage integration

Before converting matters from Clio Grow into Clio Manage, you need to connect both accounts and set up the integration. Learn more here.

Note: Each Clio Grow user needs to complete this step in order to convert their own matters and connect their Clio Grow and Clio Manage accounts.

Step 2: Convert a matter

When you convert a matter from Clio Grow to Clio Manage, the contact information is automatically converted. If you want to export only the contact, and not the matter, convert from the contact page instead. See below for a list of items and fields that are converted.

Note: Matters can only be converted one at a time.
  1. In Clio Grow, go to the matter.
  2. Click Convert to Clio Manage.
  3. Add any necessary information
  4. Click Convert matter.
  5. View the matter in Clio Manage by clicking Open matter in Clio Manage. You can also select View in Clio Manage on the matter’s page.

 

Converted items and fields

The following items and fields are converted:

    • Custom fields and field sets (if they are first created in Clio Manage and then synced to Clio Grow)
    • Primary contact and all associated contacts
    • All employees of a company contact
    • Description
    • Location
    • Notes
    • Responsible attorney
    • Originating attorney
    • Submitted documents and forms
    • Attached files
    • Appointments

The following items and fields are NOT converted:

    • Matter type
    • Matter status
    • Assigned to
    • Created on
    • Estimated case value
    • Document and form templates
    • Emails
    • Tasks
