Grow AI's Website Chat Tool

Grow AI's website chat is a 24/7 AI-powered chat widget that you can add to your firm's website to engage with prospects even outside of business hours. It collects contact and case details, answers common questions about your firm, and—if the lead qualifies—can offer them the opportunity to book a consultation. The information collected via chat is sent directly to your Clio Grow lead inbox where Grow AI continues to assist by providing a chat summary and lead assessment to help you decide how to proceed.

Note: You need Clio Grow administrator access and administrative access to your firm's website to complete this setup. If you manage the software but not the website, work with your website administrator.
Important: If your website already has a chatbot, disable it before adding the Grow AI website chat.

Make sure to set your intake criteria, frequently asked questions, and languages before you add the chat to your website.

Add the website chat to your website

The instructions for adding the website chat to your website depends on how your website is built.

Your website was built with Clio Grow

If your website was created using Clio Grow, you can add the website chat tool to it as follows:

  1. Go to Clio Grow > Leads, then click Lead screening agent. Alternatively, click the user menu (top right) > Grow settings > Grow AI.
  2. Click Install your agent, then click Web chat.
  3. Click the Clio Grow website tab.
  4. Toggle Add to your Grow website on.
  5. Optional: Click Add integration to set up Google Analytics for your web chat.
  6. Click Close.

Your website was built with another platform

Important: GoDaddy's website builder does not allow header editing and cannot be used with the Grow AI website chat tool.

To manually add the website chat tool to your existing website not created using Clio Grow, follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to Clio Grow > Leads, then click Lead screening agent. Alternatively, click the user menu (top right) > Grow settings > Grow AI.
  2. Click Install your agent, then click Web chat.
  3. Click the Custom website tab.
  4. Click Add URL, then paste your website URL and click Save. The web chat only appears on this website.
  5. Optional: Click Add integration to set up Google Analytics for your web chat.
  6. Click the copy icon in the top right of the code text block.
Note: If you do not manage your website yourself, click View email, then Copy email, and send it to whomever manages your website. Your website manager can then continue with the steps below.
  7. Log into your website builder or content management system.
  8. Paste the copied snippet into your website's HTML just before the closing </body> tag. Do not add the code more than once.
  9. Preview your changes, then publish your website to enable the chat widget.

If you experience issues with setting up the Website chat tool, refer to the troubleshooting guide below.

Customize the website chat tool

To customize the information your website chat collects from prospective clients, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Clio Grow > Leads, then click Lead screening agent. Alternatively, click the user menu (top right) > Grow settings > Grow AI.
  2. Click the blue Configure tab (the tab with two chevrons).
  3. Click Languages and appearance > Appearance > Web chat.
  4. Update any of the following:
    • Display name: Click Edit to change the firm name that appears at the top of the chat.
    • Display image: Click Upload image to change the image shown beside your web chat window.
    • AI disclosure: Toggle on to add an AI notice to the chat's opening message.
    • Privacy policy: Toggle on to show a privacy policy link below the chat. Click Edit privacy URL to change the link to your firm's own privacy policy URL.
Important: Your firm may be required to disclose the use of AI to prospective clients, or to make your privacy policy available to them. Check the rules that apply in your jurisdiction before turning these settings off.

The clickable options leads see at the start of the chat come from the lead-friendly labels you entered when you set your practice areas under Intake criteria.

Test the web chat agent

  1. Go to Clio Grow > Leads, then click Lead screening agent. Alternatively, click the user menu (top right) > Grow settings > Grow AI.
  2. Click the blue Test tab (the tab with two chevrons).
  3. In the test panel, click the Web chat tab.
  4. Start the conversation with the agent and confirm that Grow AI asks for the details you expect, answers questions the way your firm would, and offers a consultation when the lead qualifies.

Set up Google Analytics for website chat

To track how leads are using your website chat, you can connect a Google Analytics integration. This lets you measure lead attribution from chat interactions and, if you run Google Ads, connect leads back to your ad spend.

Note: Ad blockers may prevent events from being sent to Google Analytics.
  1. While you set up your web chat for your Clio Grow-hosted website, your WordPress website, or any other custom website, click Add integration to track web chat activity and leads in Google Analytics.
  2. Fill in the modal. Refer to Google's documentation to find your Measurement ID and API secret.
  3. Click Connect.

Once connected, the following events are tracked in Google Analytics:

  • chatStarted: Triggered when a visitor initiates a conversation with the website chat.
  • chatLead: Triggered when a Clio Grow lead is created from the website chat. If you run Google Ads, this event automatically connects the lead back to the originating ad click.

Troubleshoot the website chat tool

Chat does not appear on the website

This is typically caused by one of the following:

Your browser has cached an older version of the page. Hard refresh your browser to reload the latest version:

  • Windows or Linux: Ctrl + Shift + R
  • Mac: Cmd + Shift + R

Your server needs time to rebuild updated pages. Wait a few minutes, or clear the cache on your server. Search "Clear cache [your content management tool]" for platform-specific instructions.

The website URL you added in Clio Grow does not match the address where you expect the chat to appear. The chat only appears on the website you add, so check the address under Add URL.

The code snippet was added more than once, or is not just before the closing </body> tag. Remove any duplicates and place a single snippet just before the closing </body> tag.

Chat icon overlaps another element on the page

Use the zIndex property in the embed code to control layering. In the copied code, find:

script.onload = function GrowChatbotInit() { GrowChatbot.init({ growSubdomain: growSubdomain });

Add the zIndex parameter, for example:

script.onload = function GrowChatbotInit() { GrowChatbot.init({ growSubdomain: growSubdomain, zIndex: "5" });

A higher zIndex value places the element in front of others. Adjust the value as needed.
