In Clio Manage, each matter has a dashboard that provides an overview of matter information, such as financials, work in progress, basic matter details, custom fields, a timeline of matter-related events, contacts linked to the matter, and related contacts for the matter.
Tip: You can also add related or associated matters to a contact's dashboard in case you need to connect a matter to a contact that may not necessarily be a case for that contact. Learn more about associated matters here.
Access matter's dashboard
You can access a single matter's dashboard from a few places in Clio Manage.
- Go to Matters.
- Find your matter and click the matter’s name.
- Go to Contacts or search for the contact in the search bar.
- Find your contact and click the contact's name.
- In the Client's matters section of the contact's Dashboard, click the matter's name.
- Click the search bar in the Clio Manage header.
- Search for your matter and click the matter's name.
- Click Recents in the Clio Manage header.
- If you recently viewed the matter, click the matter's name under Matters.
Manage matter dashboard sections
This section shows key financial information, such as work in progress, outstanding bill balance, client funds for the matter, matter budget, and time and expenses. In this section, you can create a quick bill, view bills for this matter, request client funds for the matter, add time and expense entries, and manage payment methods.

Manage payment methods: If your firm has Clio Payments enabled, you can add new payment methods for the matter, request payment methods from the client on the matter, and manage current payment methods. Learn how to sign up for Clio Payments or how to request and store payment methods.
Note: You can collect payments via Clio Payments for matters in your firm’s default currency.
- Work in progress: The value in this section shows the combined total of all unbilled time entries for this matter, including any time entries on bills in draft and bills pending approval (unbilled). From this section, you can click Quick bills to generate a quick bill.
- Outstanding balance: The value in this section shows the total amount due on approved bills for this matter. Client funds requests are not included in this total. Click View bills to view all outstanding bills for this matter.
- Client funds (matter): This section shows the total client funds amount held at the matter-level for this matter, including the minimum client funds balance. If the client has funds held at the client-level (in the same currency as the matter), this section will also display a link to View client level funds. If funds held at the client-level is in a currency that is different from the matter, this will not be displayed. Click New request to generate a new client funds request or Edit to edit the minimum client funds balance for the matter. Budget: If a budget amount was set in the Billing Preferences of the matter, this section shows a progress bar with the value of current billed activities relative to the budget amount.
Note: The budget calculations exclude tax amounts.
- Time: This value shows the gross total for all time entries logged by your firm on this matter. Click Add time to add a new time entry. Learn more about time entries here.
- Expenses: This value shows the gross total for all expense entries logged by your firm on this matter. Click Add expense to add a new expense entry. Learn more about expenses here.
This section shows matter details that you entered when you first created the matter. You can change the information in these fields by editing the matter. You can update the matter status (to open, pending, or closed) from here.
This section shows the clients and other contacts associated with the matter, their basic contact information, including phone number, email address, address, and tags added to the contact. From this section, you can also do the following:
- Click on any contact name to navigate directly to the contact where you can then see additional details or update to the contact's information.
- Click the contact's phone number to open your preferred call service app (outside of Clio) to start a call with the contact.
- Click the contact's email address to open your preferred email service (outside of Clio Manage) and start composing an email to them.
- Click the copy icon to copy the contact's physical address to your clipboard.
- Click Edit for a contact to modify the contact via the contact page.
For related contacts you can also click Sort by to sort the list by name in ascending (A-Z) or descending (Z-A) order. After applying a sort, select List order to return the list to the default order.
This section shows a timeline of all activity on the matter, including anything that was created, edited, or deleted. Click Filters to sort the timeline by user, type of matter activity, and/or whether an activity item was deleted.
This section shows the conflict checks run for the matter. You can also click Link conflict check to link a check that should be associated with the matter or click Run conflict check to run a new check.
Users with Clio Work have access to this section in a matter's dashboard. This section lists the most recent Vincent conversations started on the matter, showing who started each one and when it was last updated. From this section, you can do the following:
- Click a conversation name to open that conversation in Clio Work.
- Click View all to see every Vincent conversation for the matter.
- Click Open Clio Work to go to the matter's dedicated workspace in Clio Work, where you can select workflows and ask questions relevant to only that matter.

Users who work with the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) and have configured Clio Manage for Legal Aid Work will have access to this section in a matter’s dashboard. This section shows the details of the Legal Aid matter. If you linked any Legal Aid matters together—by duplicating the original matter to maintain the Unique File Number (UFN) / Unique Client Number (UCN) across the matters along with other relevant information—the matter dashboard will also have a Linked matters section showing how the matters are related.
Clio's AI features work in the background of each matter to make helpful suggestions about next steps to take for the matter, for example scheduling calendar events, creating notes, tasks, or expense entries, billing your client, drafting communications, and more. Catch up is in Beta. Review the summary against the matter before relying on it for client work or deadlines.
Note: This feature is available to select plans. Learn more about your plan's features. If you need to upgrade your firm’s plan, ask a firm administrator.
If your firm has Clio's AI features enabled, this section shows an AI-generated summary of what has happened on the matter, so you can get up to speed without opening each tab. The summary covers recent activity such as documents, communications, and matter updates, and refreshes automatically. An indicator in the top-right corner of the widget shows whether the summary is current.
Give feedback: Click the thumbs up or thumbs down icon to tell Clio whether the summary was useful. Your feedback helps improve future summaries.
Customise matter dashboard
In Clio Manage, you can customize which sections (widgets) appear on a matter's Dashboard tab and how they are arranged.
Note: Customisations made to any matter of a particular practice area will apply to all matters with that practice area selected. Refer to matter details to understand where the practice area is selected for matters. The customisation will also apply to all firm users.
- Go to a matter’s dashboard.
- Click Customise.

Check and uncheck the boxes to hide or unhide sections that you want to appear or not appear in the matter’s dashboard.
Note: The check boxes that appear are dependent on the matter’s practice area.
- Click and drag the sections to rearrange them.

- Once you have made your changes, click Save.
Every firm user can customise their own matter dashboard.
- Go to a matter's dashboard.
- Turn on the New dashboard toggle in the matter header.
- Click the customise icon beside the toggle. The customising toolbar appears at the top of the dashboard.
- Make your changes:
- To reorder widgets, drag a widget to a new position.
- To resize a widget, drag its bottom-right corner.
- To remove a widget, click the X in its top-right corner.
- To add a widget back, click Add widget and select it from the list.
- To undo all of your customisations and return to Clio's default layout, click Reset to default.
- Click Save to keep your changes.
