You can add custom fields and/or custom field sets to a matter or contact when you create or edit the matter or contact record. In addition, for matters, you can add custom directly from the matter's Custom Fields subtab. You can also edit the field values from these locations. This article outlines the methods for adding and updating custom field information.
Add custom fields and field sets to a matter or contact
You can add custom fields and field sets to a matter or contact when creating a new matter or contact or while editing an existing matter or contact. For matters you can also add and edit custom fields and field sets directly from the Custom Fields subtab when viewing the matter. This latter option allows users with matter access to add custom fields without navigating into the full matter edit form.
Add custom fields and field sets when creating or editing a matter or contact
- Go to the Matters or Contacts tab.
- Create a new matter or contact, or edit an existing one.
- Within the creation or edit form, locate the Custom fields section.
- Click the down arrow for the Add a custom field or custom field set field.

Select the desired custom fields or field sets from the dropdown menu.
Note: Individual custom fields you select are added to the General field set—the set used to hold individual custom fields you add here. - Save the matter or contact.
Add custom fields and field sets while viewing a matter
- Navigate to a matter and select the Custom Fields subtab.
- Click +Add Fields. If this is the first time adding fields or field sets to the matter, click Add custom fields.
- In the Add Fields panel, select individual fields or field sets.
- You can enter the field or field set name in the search box to narrow the results in the list, or scroll down to find and select a field or field set.
Remove custom fields and field sets from a matter or contact
You can remove previously added fields and field sets from the Custom Fields subtab when viewing a matter, or when you edit a matter or contact. You can only remove fields and field sets that you did not mark as Required when you created them.
Remove custom fields and field sets when editing a matter or contact
- Navigate to a matter or contact and click Edit matter or Edit contact.
- Find the Custom fields section.
- To remove a field set, click Remove set then confirm the action. To remove an individual field, click the X next to the field.
- Save the matter or contact.
Remove custom field sets while viewing a matter
- Navigate to a matter and select the Custom Fields subtab.
- Find the custom field set you want to remove.
- Click the three dots ("more" icon) on the right top of the field set.
- Select Remove set.
- Click Move data to general section to retain the custom field data or Delete data to remove the custom field set and its data.
Remove individual custom fields while viewing a matter
- Navigate to a matter and select the Custom Fields subtab.
- Find the custom field you want to remove.
- Click the field value.
- Click the trash can ("delete") icon.
- Click Remove.
Edit custom field values
When working with custom fields in Clio Manage, you can edit the value of a field added to a matter directly from the matter's Custom Fields subtab or you can edit the values of fields added to a contact or matter by editing the contact or matter.
To edit the value of a field added to a matter from the matter's Custom Fields subtab:
- Go to the main Matters tab and select a matter.
- Click the Custom Fields subtab.
- Click the custom field value to open the edit value box.
- Update the custom field.
- To save your changes, click the checkmark or click anywhere outside the text box. To cancel your changes, click the X.
