Release Trust Funds

Releasing trust funds returns remaining funds to your client, pays a third party from trust, or corrects funds applied in error. Recording the transaction logs the funds leaving the trust account and adjusts the matter trust balance. With transactions recorded, your Clio trust records match the funds leaving your account.

Note: If you deleted the matter before releasing remaining trust funds, recover the matter from the Recovery bin first. See Delete and Recover Matters.

Release trust funds to a client

  1. Go to the matter or contact, depending on where the trust funds are stored.
  2. Click the Transactions subtab.
  3. In the Transactions table, use the down arrow to select the client trust account.
  4. Click New payment.
  5. Enter the amount you are releasing and complete the remaining fields:
    • Description: Enter the purpose of the transaction, such as "Payment to [provider] for [matter]".
    • Destination: Enter non-person details about the transaction, such as bank account information.
    • Payee: Identify who receives the funds.
    • Payment method: Enter how the transaction is completed, such as a check or bank transfer.
  6. Click Record transaction.

Pay a third party from trust funds

  1. Go to Accounts.
  2. Select the trust account you make the payment from.
  3. Click New payment.
  4. Complete the required fields, including the payment type, recipient, the client and matter the funds come from, and the description.
  5. Click Record transaction.

When you select a matter, Clio shows the matter trust balance. If the account does not hold enough funds, Clio warns that the transaction overdraws the account, and proceeding moves the account into an overdrawn state.

Note: To record a BPAY payment, select EFT for the payment type, then use values that clearly identify the transaction as BPAY in the Recipient BSB code and Recipient account number fields (for example, 111 for both), and include "BPAY" in the Description.
