Custom fields in Clio Manage and Clio Grow allow your firm to capture additional information beyond the standard fields available for contacts and matters. Custom field sets are collections of individual custom fields grouped. You can add these field sets to a contact or matter for a specific practice area. These firm-wide definitions help you organize and track case details.
Setting up your custom fields helps ensure data consistency and efficiency. Below are some tips to help you start with custom fields:
- Create practice area fields proactively: Define custom fields and field sets for your practice areas before you urgently need them. This ensures consistency and saves time during client intake and matter creation.
- Plan your custom fields: Before creating fields, outline the specific information you need to track. Consider how this data will be used in documents, reports, or workflows to ensure your custom fields meet your firm's needs.

Custom field types in Clio Manage
When creating new custom fields, you will need to select what type of field will be used. Below is a breakdown of each “Type”:

- Checkbox
This is a single checkbox used to record "Yes" or "No" information. Checking the box will record "Yes." Leaving the box blank will record "No." This is useful for status on filings, conflict of interest checks, and more.
- Contact Select
This allows you to select a contact that already exists in your account. Once the custom field is added to a matter and a contact is selected, the contact’s name will appear hyperlinked and you can use the contact's custom fields as merge fields to generate document templates for your matter. This gives you more flexibility and eliminates the need to add a contact as a related contact.
- Date
This field allows you to select a date for a custom field.
- Email Address
This will prompt you to enter a valid email address for a custom field. When entered, the email address will appear hyperlinked.
- Integer
This is a numerical value field for a custom field.
- Matter Select
This allows you to select a matter that already exists in your account. When selected, the matter will appear hyperlinked.
- Money
This will prompt you to enter a numerical value with a maximum of two decimal points. Currency characters, such as the $ symbol, are not permitted.
- Picklist
This allows you to create a dropdown menu of options. Each picklist option has a 64-character limit.
- Text (Multi-Line)
This allows you to enter multiple lines of text up to a maximum of 64,000 characters.
- Text (One-Line)
This allows you to enter a single line of text up to a maximum of 255 characters.
- Time
This will prompt you to enter a clock time format. You can use 12-hour or 24-hour time.
- Web Address
This allows you to enter a website address. When entered, the website address will appear hyperlinked.
Custom field types in Clio Grow
When creating new custom fields, you will need to select what type of field will be used. Below is a breakdown of each “Field type”:
- Checkbox
