Create Custom Fields in Clio Manage

Custom fields are additional fields of information that you may need to capture for a contact or matter that Clio does not automatically capture during contact and matter creation. You can create individual custom fields for matters and contacts, or group them into field sets for a specific practice area.

Note: All users can use custom fields, but only users with administrator permissions can create, edit, or delete custom fields and custom field sets.

Create individual custom fields

You can create individual custom fields for matters and contacts. When creating a custom field, you can set it as a default field and select whether it is required. Default custom fields apply to all contact and matter forms and can be left blank, while your required fields need to be filled and cannot be left blank.

Note: If you need to uncheck the default option from a default custom field, and the custom field is part of a field set, remove the default option from the field set first.
  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter Custom Fields or Contact Custom Fields.
  3. Select Individual Fields.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Complete the custom field details. The Name field is limited to 64 characters.
  6. Click Save.

Create custom field sets

After creating individual custom fields, you can add them to a field set. When creating a field set, you can select to make the field set a default set. A default field set will appear on all contacts or matters.

  1. Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  2. Select Matter Custom Fields or Contact Custom Fields.
  3. Select Field Sets.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Complete the details and add existing individual custom fields.
  6. Click Save.
