Filter, Export, and Convert Contacts

Contacts can be exported out of Clio Manage and Clio Grow for reporting purposes. You can also convert contacts and their data from Clio Grow to Clio Manage when prospective clients become clients and you are ready to begin billing.

Convert contacts from Manage to Grow

If you only need to import one or a couple of contacts into Clio Grow, and those contacts exist in Clio Manage, you can use the Clio Manage import option in Clio Grow. 

Tip: If you need to import contacts in bulk from a CSV file, see this article.

  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Click Create new contact.
  3. Select Convert from Clio Manage.
  4. Search for the contact. Once selected, you can the contact type, lead source, and tags.
  5. Click Submit.

 

Filter contacts 

Clio Manage Clio Grow
When filtering contacts in Clio Manage, you can filter by whether the contact is a client and by custom fields. You can also insert whole keywords into the Filter by keyword field to search for specific contacts.
  1. Go to Contacts
  2. Optional: Select All, People, or Companies  
  3. Click Filters, select your filters, and click Apply filters.

 

Export and print contacts in Clio Manage

When exporting contacts from the main Contacts tab, the export will only show data that you entered in the contact form when the contact was created or edited. If you need to export contact-specific information such as notes, documents, transactions, etc., you can do so from that particular subtab. 

Note: The export will not show billing preferences. Additionally, only the contact methods listed as primary will export. 
  1. Go to Contacts. 
  2. Optional: Select one of the All, People, or Companies subtabs.
  3. Optional: Select Filters to apply specific parameters.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Export.
  5. Select the export format. If you select CSV, you can choose to show all columns from the table or only columns that are visible/checked.
  6. Click Export.
  7. Optional: Print the export. 

 

Export contacts in Clio Grow to CSV

You can back up your Clio Grow data by exporting a CSV list of your contacts and matters. When exporting contacts in Clio Grow, you can export multiple contacts from the main Contacts page or you can export specific information for just one contact.

Note: Only administrators can export contacts from Clio Grow.
Export multiple contacts Export single contact
  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Select View all, Leads, or Clients.
  3. Optional: Select Apply filters to apply specific parameters.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Export all contacts to CSV.
  5. Click Send CSV.
  6. Go to the email and click the link to the CSV file.

 

Convert contacts from Grow to Manage

When a prospective client becomes a client, you can convert all the contact and/or matter information from Clio Grow into Clio Manage to begin billing and accepting payments. 

Tip: If you are set up with single sign-on (SSO), you can navigate easily between Clio Grow and Clio Manage by clicking the Clio Grow or Clio Manage link in the header.

Step 1: Set up the Clio Grow and Clio Manage integration

Before converting contacts and/or matters from Clio Grow into Clio Manage, you need to connect both accounts and set up the integration. Learn more here.

Note: Each Clio Grow user needs to complete this step to convert their own matters and connect their Clio Grow and Clio Manage accounts.

Step 2: Convert a contact

When you convert a contact from Clio Grow to Clio Manage, only the contact gets converted. If you want to convert both the contact and the contact’s matters, convert from the matter’s page instead. See below for a list of items and fields that are converted.

  1. In Clio Grow, go to the contact.
  2. Click Convert to Clio Manage.
  3. Add any necessary information
  4. Click Convert contact.
  5. View the contact in Clio Manage by clicking Open contact in Clio Manage. You can also select View in Clio Manage on the contact’s page. 

 

Converted items and fields 

The following items and fields are converted:

  • Custom fields and field sets (if they are first created in Clio Manage and then synced to Clio Grow)
  • All employees of a company contact
  • Salutation or title
  • First name
  • Middle name
  • Last name
  • Date of birth
  • Email address (multiple)
  • Phone number (multiple)
  • Address (multiple)
  • Company name
  • Notes
  • File attachments

The following items and fields are NOT converted:

  • Lead source
  • Contact type
  • Referred by
  • Tags
  • Tasks
  • Emails
