The Clio Desktop App allows you to navigate documents stored in Clio in a way that is similar to navigating documents on your computer. Navigating the Clio Desktop App is also similar to navigating the Documents tab in Clio's web app. Your documents are organized as follows.
- New: Upload files, folders, or create a new empty folder.
- Recents: Documents you have recently opened, viewed, or edited.
- Starred: Files and folders you have marked with a star.
-
Drafts: This corresponds to the Private section in the web app. You can use this to house files and folders that are not associated with a matter or contact and that you want to keep visible only to you. This folder is also readily available directly from your computer.
- Mac: Find the "Clio Drafts" folder in your local Documents folder.
- Windows: Find the "Clio Private" or "Clio Drafts" folder in File Explorer.
- Firm: Documents that do not belong to a matter or contact, such as firm or marketing material.
- Contacts: Documents grouped by contact.
- Matters: Documents grouped by matter.
- Trash: Deleted files, which can be restored or permanently deleted. Learn more about deleting and restoring documents.
- Settings: Document settings allow you to select which matters' documents you want to sync to the Clio Desktop App (Closed, Pending, and/or Open matters). Learn more in Set Up Clio Desktop App.
Choose document navigation view
You can view files and folders as a list or as columns. Select the list or column icon at the top right of the file area.
- List view (recommended) shows the list of documents for the folder you are in. Depending on the folder location, the list view may include columns such as Name, Last modified, Owner, and Size. A breadcrumb at the top of the page shows your location.
- Column view uses each column to show the location of the folder you are in.
Important: We recommend using list view. Column view is available but may not always behave as expected. If you run into problems, switch to list view.
Tip: Depending on your location and view, you may have the option to sort your files by Name or Last modified date.
Search for a document
You can search for document and folder names using the search bar. Enter part of the document or folder name and press Enter, then select the relevant file from the list.
Note: Search does not search for text inside documents.
