Clio Manage Matters Overview

In Clio, a matter is a legal case. All your casework in Clio will be linked to a matter file, keeping important case information in one place. You can access a matter's details on its specific page or view all matters and related data on the main Matters page in Clio Grow and Clio Manage.

Tip: Before adding matters, set up your matter numbering scheme. This lets you define how matter numbers and descriptions appear.

View all matters on the overview page

Matters in Clio Manage have one of three states: open (active), pending (e.g., cases you are considering), or closed (fully resolved). You can view matters by status on the main Matters page:

Note: You can click the Global Search to quickly navigate between your recent matters.
  1. Go to Matters.
  2. Select one of the All, Open, Pending, or Closed quick filters to view matters by status.
  3. Optional: Click Columns to view specific columns. You can also drag and rearrange columns and click each column to sort ascending or descending parameters.
  4. Optional: Click Filters to sort by filters. Learn more about filters and exporting here.
  5. Optional: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Expand rows to view full matter descriptions.

 

View individual matter cards

When you go into a single matter’s overview page, you can view all matter-specific data and information in one place. To access a single matter’s overview page:

  1. Go to Matters.
  2. Find your matter and click the matter’s name.
Tip: You can also search for your matter in the search bar.
Dashboard:
An overview of the matter, including a financial overview (such as work in progress, outstanding balance, and matter trust funds), matter details (such as status, responsible lawyer, and dates), contacts (clients and related contacts), custom fields, and conflict checks. Depending on your subscription and region, you may also view Conversations with Vincent and AI Actions. You can also customize your Matter dashboard.
Clio Work:
For firms with Clio Work, this subtab provides direct access to Vincent AI, Clio Library, and Clio Draft if applicable. Clio Work identifies proactive next steps, specific to your matter, and drafts them in advance for you to review in your matter's dashboard. Vincent AI and Clio Library (a database of over one billion global legal documents) analyze litigation and transactional documents using the matter’s documents, communications, notes, and deadlines.
Custom Fields:
This subtab displays matter custom fields. You can add custom fields and update the field data. Learn more about Custom Fields in Clio Manage here.
Activities
This subtab shows time and expenses entered on the matter. Learn more about Activities here.
Calendar
This subtab displays calendar events, which default to display by upcoming, you can click to view past or all events for a matter. You can also create new events, manage visible columns, search and filter the event table. Learn more about the Calendar here.
Communications
This subtab shows communications for this matter, including phone logs, email logs, text messages, internal firm messages, and messages shared with clients through the client portal. Learn more about Communications here.
Notes

Documents
This subtab shows documents for this matter, including document integrations with third-party drives such as Google Drive. Learn more about Documents here.

Manage matter notes

In Clio Manage,  you can add, edit, and delete notes. You can also add time to notes and export and print notes.

Tip: Use keywords to search for notes in the search bar.

  1. Go to Matters and click a matter’s name. You can also search for the matter in the search bar.
  2. Click Notes.
  3. Click New note.
    Tip: When adding the description, you can use text formatting like bold, italics, or underline to emphasise critical details or use lists to organise content. You can also add links to the description to reference other information, both in and outside of Clio Manage. For information in Clio Manage, you can copy the link address to any link in Clio Manage (use right click (Windows) or control + click (Mac OS), then Copy Link Address), then return to your description to paste the link.
  4. Enter the note details and click Save note.
